Level 85 Cataclysm Mutilate Talent Build

Just like we mentioned in our Combat Talent Build, no one knows just yet what the top talent builds are going to be for Cataclysm but after some musing and a little short discussion on the PVE Rogue Forums we've decided to go for it and give you what's thought to be a good estimate of the Level 85 top talent builds in Cataclysm.

Assassination Talent Build 31/2/8

Again as with Combat this build doesn't change much from our Level 80 version. In this build we have 3 talent points that are flexible however it's generally accepted that while 2/2 [Quickening] doesn't directly affect DPS it does provide more damage up time for your rogue and allows you to use enchants that do not increase run speed giving you better stat bonuses instead.

Aside from that we have one talent point remaining without a home and this can be placed in [Blackjack], [Improved Expose Armor], [Deadened Nerves] or even [Deadly Brew]. Most of these talents are situational or alter our crowd control/damage reduction abilities in some fashion so they are entirely a personal choice which one of these you go for.

It's worth noting that you may prefer to have the spare point in [Deadly Momentum] while you are leveling to 85 or farming heroics but it should not be considered in a level 85 raiding build really.

Looking at the combat tree we can see that the only talent points worth having that we don't already have yet (such as Precision) are [Improved Slice and Dice], which isn't very beneficial for a Mutilate rogue as our Envenoms should easily take care of our Slice and Dice buff and [Aggression] which increases our Backstab damage by up to 20%. So looking at the Subtlety Tree we can obtain [Opportunity] instead which gives us up to 30% increased damage not only to our Backstab ability but also to Mutilate and Garrote making it extremely desirable. This does mean however that need to place 2 talent points somewhere else to get to that talent so we have chosen 2/2 [Nightstalker] which should help damage indirectly by reducing downtime in stealth and improving the ability to stealth frequently (particularly useful in heroics).

For those who are wondering the Mutilate Glyphs we were using at Level 80 are still the best Glyphs for rogues at Level 85 as far as we know at the moment.

  2. Just thought it would be best to add some further clarification to this.

First of all I expect this isn't the blog for you, with that in mind there's simply no point you being here :P Well except to troll that is ofc.

Secondly, this blog does draw 95% of it's content from the results of those hardworking theorycrafters over at Elitist Jerks, we've neve pretended otherwise, in fact we've said as much more than a few times in blog comments to readers just like you who have a problem with anyone other than elitist jerks writing about rogue stuff as thoguh it's somehow being fraudulant.

We whole heartedly thank eveyone at Elistist Jerks for the work they do, and we conduct our own research from either our own musings, threads on elitist jerks or from other rogue resources out there (omg yes there are other places rogue like out there too, crazy i know).

And just to clarify my comment above specifically, these recent talent builds are 100% pve rogues, i simply havnt had the time to read through most of the EJ stuff yet and havnt come across the EJ talent builds for 85 at all yet. Hopefully Ill get some good research time in over the next week but for this case you couldn't be more wrong. Just because Elitist Jerks have done it, doesn't mean no one else is allowed to :)

I suggest you stick to EJ's as obviously you are not happy with this blog so it's not suited to your tastes, and I do really wish you all the best with your wow toons where ever you may go.

  7. haha thanks :) But ofc, without EJ's we wouldnt be possible ^^ so kudos to the guys at EJ's, but yes, theirs is a unique discussion board for in depth theorcrafting and discussions, not a concise how to guide :P thats why the blog was born, to bring EJ information to the masses in an easy to understand and easy to read manner ^^

and even i have trouble sifting through all that ej's crap lol.

  10. build seems flawed, id burn those extra points in ass tree on the 1st tear, having it renew your s&D And recoup is huge, and most boss's have some added trash, which is usually hard to keep your s7d going through. the only other option would be blackjack, but i really dont see the the need for that. perhaps in later content

  11. perhaps if you want a leveling build or a heroic build but this is a max dps raiding build for level 85 :)

  12. Hello Garona:)

First of, great blog, i've learned alot from this blog. Huggz N kissez to you for that.

Just wondered in this mutilate specc, wouldnt it benefit more from 1/2 in deadly brew, since it seems like there are quite few places rogues are able to kite in order to help in an encounter.

    Cheers, Eli :)

  13. well the talent point that is interchangeable is entirely up to you where you stick it, they are all pretty much situational so its up to you which one you prefer to have in your build :) if you dont have any other kiting classes in your raid (which u prolly should do) then by all means, if you do, you could choose blackjack instead for when you use alot of sap to control trash, you could use it on improved expose armor if you dont have anyone doing that for you (which u prolly should do too).

Eiher way the only ones you shouldnt mess with are the dps talents and the 2 points in quickeneing as this is actually a dps (or damage) increase although it may not look it.

Thanks for dropping by Eli hope you continue to do so :D
