The original boundaries are the same for each hit cap so let's work out what we need in order to be hit capped.
Special Attacks: 8% Hit
Poison Procs: 17% Hit
Auto Attacks: 27% Hit
Conversion Ratings
Conversion ratings have now changed. We now know that in order to obtain 1% Hit we will need 30.76 Hit Rating. We also know that in order to obtain 1% Spell Hit (used to calculate poison hit cap) we will need 26.23 Hit Rating. With this in mind we can now see what our hit caps are:
Special Attacks: 246 Hit Rating
Poison Procs: 446 Hit Rating
Auto Attacks: 831 Hit Rating
Deducting Buffs
We no longer have buffs such as Heroic Presence in Patch 4.0.1 but we do still have the talent [Precision]. This awards us with 6% Melee and Spell Hit so it can be applied to all of our hit buffs.
Special Attacks: 8% Hit - Precision (6%) = 2% Hit.
2% Hit = 2 x 30.76 = 61.52 Hit Rating
Poison Procs: 17% Hit - Precision (6%) = 11% Hit.
11% Hit = 11 x 26.23 = 288.53 Hit Rating
Auto Attacks: 27% Hit - Precision (6%) = 21% Hit.
21% Hit = 21 x 30.76 = 645.96 Hit Rating.
Precision
If you are an Assassination rogue you may not have 3/3 points in Precision and therefore your hit caps will increase somewhat. To clarify, Precision awards the following hit rating for each hit cap:
1/3 Precision = 61.52 Hit Rating and 52.46 Spell Hit Rating
2/3 Precision = 123.04 Hit Rating and 104.92 Spell Hit Rating
3/3 Precision = 184.56 Hit Rating and 157.38 Spell Hit Rating
What Does this Mean?
Q. Does this mean I have to get a whopping 646 Hit Rating in order to become hit capped?
A. No. Rogues will only need to become Poison Hit Capped. That means you will need 289 Hit Rating with 3/3 Precision in order to be Hit Capped.
Q. Should I stack hit after the poison cap?
A. Yes, hit rating is now a blue gem, you can use agility and hit split gems (Glinting Dreadstone) in order to stack more hit. This prevents you from going over the Crit Cap.
Q. Is it possible to get to the Hard Hit Cap?
A. It is probably possible yes but you should never try to do so. The hard hit cap is an upper boundary but not a goal.
Q. What is a good amount of hit to get?
A. Anything that is more than the poison hit cap but less than the hard hit cap is generally a good number (289 to 649 hit rating). You may need to stack a little more hit if you are over the crit cap.

Does CsC 3 have a mac version?
ReplyDeleteIm afraid not :s perhaps that is something I should look into!
ReplyDeleteI concur with Anonymous! I tried to use a crossover program to no avail.
ReplyDeleteHi there and thanks for the tips. Just wondered if these caps are relevant at all levels from 80 through to 85?
ReplyDeleteim afraid not, the caps will change from 80-85 because the conversion rating for each stat changes per level.
ReplyDeletewhen cataclysm is launched a new version of csc3 will be launched that details the level 85 caps and this post will also be updated for level 85.
from the journey to 85 i wouldnt worry too much about it. just re-evaluate it again at 85
Thankyou so much for all the work you have done here. It is great that all the information I have been looking for is here in one place, clearly explained and accessible, keep up the good work

Also to the above comment that remains: Cheers :) Glad it has helped ^^
wow great job with the numbers and equations! very flat out and easy to understand!
ReplyDeleteSorry about this stupid question, but i don't understand hit cap at all. How do you look at hit cap and get all those numbers?
ReplyDeleteThis was very helpful. I'd read a while back about Bliz changing rogue setup, so that our dps was mainly reliant on special attacks, but didn't really understand how or why. When I read this post on hit caps, the light bulb came on. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi, just wondered... is the in game Garona's Battlegear named after you... or the other way round? I know Blizz has a habit of naming in game char's/item's after people who contribute within the community.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any precision, and my hit is at 556, I am at 36/36 Expertise. I have NOT reforged any of my gear yet. I was Mutilate before 4.0.1 so all my gems are now Agility instead of AP, so I am good there. What should I reforge Critical Strike Chance to if the gear already has Haste on it? Check out my character Tombs on Feathermoon. (He is Undead)
ReplyDeleteI would just like to say that I am the one who just posted above, thought I would put a name to it. :D
ReplyDelete@anon1: glad to hear! :D thanks for commenting!
ReplyDelete@anon2: Well essentially hit cap is defined as "The amount of hit required in order to ensure your attacks cannot be missed by your target enemy).
ReplyDeleteTherefore soft hit cap is special attacks... once you have obtained your special hit cap your special abilities (such as Sinister Strike) can no longer be missed and will always hit your target.
The poison hit cap ensures your spells (i.e. poison only for us rogues) always hit your target. Finally the hard hit cap ensure all of your auto attacks always hit your target (not usually obtained by rogues).
The hit caps changes depending on the target level you are fighting. The higher thier level is, the higher your hit cap is and the more hit you will need.
These hit caps are for raiding rogues... this means that this is the amount of hit you will need for each cap based on a target mob level of 83. (standard raid mob level).
Someone somewhere figured out this means you will need 27% hit to reach the auto attacks hit cap for a mob that is 3 levels above you. All we had to do then is calculate how much hit rating that is by multiplying 1% hit (30.76) by 27 and then deducting any special abilities of talents we have etc that increase our hit.
I hope this covers it for you ^_^
@anon3: um sure thing i think :)
ReplyDelete@anon4:
ReplyDeleteWell that would have been imba cool lol but no im afraid it's more like the other way around. My original name of Garona is taken from the rogue Garona in wow lore (half orc half something else). My toon is human but garona is the only decent female rogue of note so i stole her name for my alias. My toon is no longer named as such either.
Also I havn't really contributed anything of note so i wouldn't expect that :P I'm just a collector of information from other sources. :)
@Tombs: Hey there ^_^
ReplyDeleteI don't have any precision, and my hit is at 556, I am at 36/36 Expertise. I have NOT reforged any of my gear yet. wow that's a tricky one indeed. :s You have plenty of hit, and too much expertise?
I assuem this is perhaps your toon on the US side?
http://wow-heroes.com/index.php?zone=us&server=Feathermoon&name=Tombs
First of all reforge your offhand and cloak expertise into haste. This should put your expertise in the right place roughly.
Aside from that reforge the following imo:
shoulders - Crit to haste
chest - hit to haste
belt - crit to haste
legs - crit to haste
boots - crit to haste
ashen ring1 - crit to haste
mos trinket - hit to haste
i would then leave the others with crit and haste on them as while techincially you should reforge all crit to hit you are quite a bit low on crit as it is. I think this is mainly due to your gear which has a few peices in it letting the rest down and they seem to be all of the same gear type. Perhaps invest in looking into some alternative gear to swap out? Im afraid this would be much easier with a dps spreadsheet but for now Ill just say dont worry about it. Reforge as above and leave the rest for now. :)
What I kinda miss is: What if you're way under crit cap and way over 289 hit. Should you then consider dropping/reforging hit for haste or leave crit or do nothing and leave the hit. Thus closer to crit cap but more miss chance instead.
ReplyDeletewell as a rule of thumb white hit (hit beyond the poison cap) is still better than crit.
ReplyDeleteHowever, if you have items with hit on them and no crit at all, you can consider reforging the hit into haste (if possible) or mastery (if mutilate).
I'm a bit stupid; What hit rating do I need to reach the poison hit cap with 2/3 Precision?
ReplyDeletewith 2/3 Precision you need 341 hit
ReplyDeleteoh sorry i must have missed this one =o
ReplyDeleteid go with 342 just to be safe rounding up :)
thanks anon2 for answering this =o
Hi, garona
ReplyDeletecongrats on your work.
i got a little confused with this new stats and all, caus i havent played for long.
my stats are:
hit: 458
exp: 23/23 (182)
crit: 42.87
and i have 3/3 precision
in csc3 my expertise says its perfect but for hit says just good should i put some more hit?
you can look at my toon if you like an tell me
toon: ashimaru @ emeriss EU server
thanks in advance!!
the csc3 program doesnt determien whether or not hit is perfect because its basically anything betwene poison cap and hard cap is good so long as you are below the crit cap and not wasting other stats to get more hit over the poison cap.
ReplyDeleteso basically, no i think it's perfect :) it just cant differentiate between good and perfect hit im afraid. from a glance id say all your stats are bang on and you're good to go.
Thanks alot it helped me big time!!
ReplyDeleteso i'll just reforge
crit -> haste
:)
sounds liek aplan to me
ReplyDeleteThe expertise c(r)ap...
ReplyDeleteSince getting to the exact rating (200) to cap expertise is pretty hard, AND the fact that anything exceeding the cap is equivalent of decreasing dps since it's a 100% waste of stat; I'm wondering if getting to 198 expertise rating is good enough?
Yeah, a lvl 84 boss may theoretically dodge 0,75% of my strikes but really, doesn't the stat I've put elsewhere even this out?
Rgrds,
Shadeborn
Well there's a simple solution to this. at the moment at level 80 the epxertise cap has changed and is now 22.4 expertise skill (172 rating). or 23 skill. so if you have 198 rating you're already good to go and you wont get dodged despite what the tooltip may tell you.
ReplyDeleteat level 85 itll be back to 26 skill again but require more rating to get that skill but we dont have to worry about that just yet :)
