Best Rogue Professions in Cataclysm

Professions in Cataclysm have not yet been lined up properly because we're still short on some basic information. However we do have a good estimate for what the best professions in Cataclysm are so if you are considering a profession change this post should help you decide which professions are right for you.

First of all It's worth mentioning that so far Engineering isn't impressing anyone. In the past it was our most powerful profession as a rogue but in cataclysm Blizzard have brought the profession back down to earth and it's no more likely to be a gimmick profession once more. Perfect if your rogue is just an alt but for those of you who have a serious raiding rogue main it may be time to hang up your Engineer's Army Knife and put Jeeves to sleep.

The current discussion on professions we are having at PVE Rogues can be found in our forum thread Professions. So far this is the order in which the professions are currently being regarded for rogue DPS:
  1. Leatherworking
  2. Jewelcrafting
  3. Blacksmithing/Alchemy/Enchanting/Inscription
  4. Gathering Professions/Engineering
It makes a nice change to see Leatherworking at the top of the profession list here as it was rated one of the worst professions to have as a rogue in Wrath. Leatherworking is extremely handy as a rogue leveling up and the fact that the new Chaos Orbs will be soulbound in Cataclysm makes this profession even more convincing. It's also worth noting one of our best epic chests can be crafted from leatherworking using these Chaos Orbs.

Many people already have Jewelcrafting as their second profession as this was rated highly in Wrath as a rogue profession. However, if you do not yet have jewelcrafting then do not despair because it is only marginally better than the professions below it (Blacksmithing, Alchemy, Enchanting, Inscription) and so you don't need to worry if you have any of these professions instead.

Finally the gathering professions are last in the list although many rogues have taken up a gathering profession to replace engineering while they level up to 85. This is because the materials for professions will undoubtedly be far too expensive at the start of Cataclysm to purchase for the average rogue so obtaining a gathering profession to compliment your other main profession will help you to level it up properly and make some money on the side until you reach level 85 and you can replace it with your new top DPS profession.

So, if you haven't thought about professions just yet now is the time to do so and make sure your second profession is up to scratch and ready for Cataclysm if you want to start gathering on your way to level 85.

  1. damn. sucks that engineering isn't going to be as awesome in cata. I'm not going to give up hope though, engineering is the only profession I wholeheartedly enjoyed while leveling. would be a shame to give it up.

  3. LW may be top of the heap but my guess is that it drops really fast once we get to the first major patch or so. Looking back all the LW/BS/Tailor professions were good or better at an expansion release but quickly fell to epics from honor/emblems etc.

Maybe Blizz will do something different this time but who knows. Finally, looking at some of the mats it really seems you need skinning or an alt that is leveling up at the same level as your main.

  4. The Chaos Orbs may be soulbound, but does that mean the product of the Chaos Orbs is also soulbound, or will they be BoE like they have always been?

  5. goodmongo: yep i guess thats something we just need to be prepared/aware of

anon: no the crafted items will be bind on equip like they have *recently* been in the past :P (Crafted epic items used to be bind on pickup).

so you can still get the gear you just need to pay a crafter who has enough of his orbs to make it for you.
